WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MASCARA

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A MASCARA

“I won't cry for you, my mascara's too expensive”
- Adriana Lima

There are some obvious things that are basic priorities for a good mascara. For example, mascara that doesn’t run or smudge. And it wasn’t so long ago that having a mascara that just stayed put on your lashes all day was a seriously tall task, in fact, nearly impossible to achieve.

Just like roller skates and tv sets, mascaras have changed dramatically too. Make-up is a multi-billion-dollar industry. Clients these days expect better results and will pay generously for them. As you can imagine, the competition between cosmetic companies is fierce which means more innovation.

The developments in mascara have done a big high jump over the last few years. Requests for “Mascara that gives me a natural look while looking like I have extensions” may be pushing it – however people have been asking, and cosmetic companies have listened.

So here are some things to look for when getting your mascara in order to get the most benefits.

For your mascara brush:
SIZE – It matters, when we’re looking at brush size.
A large will give curl to the lashes, and a small brush make your lashes look straighter.

BRUSH BRISTLES
The density of the bristles will create different effects on your lashes.
The less bristles on your brush - the thicker your lashes will be.
If you want your lashes to have a fluffier look - go with more bristles.

“It's always great to have a great mascara that makes your lashes look thick and full. That's a definite must have.”
- Carmen Electra

FORMULA
Most mascaras have had pretty much the same basic formula since the 1960s - a little bit of wax, black pigment, oils and preservatives.
That was until now!
In the past few years, mascara has developed in leaps and bounds. Mascara from times past compared to mascara now is like comparing the Stone Age to the Space Age in terms of development.
The great thing is, the new and rapidly developing formulas are no longer hidden or being kept for celebrities.  Seriously, who isn’t a celebrity these days?
Mascaras on the market are now more sophisticated than ever before. For example, the Simply Naked Beauty Mascaras all have the added benefits of collagen for lengthening and strengthening the lashes, castor oil for eyelash growth and green tea fibres for adding volume.

“Mascara is my go-to product before stepping out of the house.”
- Lindsey Vonn

FIBER MASCARA
These mascaras contain tiny fibres that adhere to the natural lash, creating a look very similar to natural lash extensions. They are excellent for adding length. The fibres are usually made from rayon or silk however some of the more innovative mascaras contain natural green tea fibres that are more lightweight and are so much better on so many levels.

“The one product I can't live without is my mascara. I'm addicted to long eyelashes and think girls just look so pretty with long lashes!”
 - Abbey Clancy

PRESERVATIVES
Yes, absolutely! Preservatives.
Now, I’m the biggest fangirl there is of natural and organic skincare, however when it comes to the eyes, I definitely feel preservatives are a necessary evil. They are added to prevent bacteria, fungi and mold in your mascara and therefore prevent irritation, infection and damage to the eyes. However, not all preservatives are created equal - some can actually be quite toxic.
Luckily, safer preservatives are available and used in most of the higher quality mascaras on the market, which leads onto the next point – quality.

QUALITY
There is a name for products which are of poor quality and made cheaply. Chintzy!
Many commercial mascara brands often contain ingredients that are inexpensive to obtain, but may be harmful to your health. This results in a final product that is chintzy to say the least.
When using products around your eyes, don’t go chintzy, go quality!
Healthier alternatives use ingredients that may cost a little more, are better for the client and less likely to cause a reaction.

In closing, if you’re looking for all of these qualities in a mascara, the Simply Naked Beauty Lash Science Gold covers all bases and will have your lashes looking fabulous.
This mascara is their top end version as it comes with an additional primer base which conditions and nourishes the lashes too.

“I really have fun making up. I have a good face for making up, good bones. I do the shapings, then the eyes. Then I put on mascara and I do something else. Then I put on mascara again and do something else. Then I put on more mascara and my whole face is completely made up.”
